Education forum @ YC Office June 28th, 1pm

For all you educationalists (teachers, trainers, policy makers, etc.) out there please join us for an open forum for education on the border at the YC office.  Right now I am trying to come up with a decent reading that we can use for a launching pad for the conversation, and I am struggling. Check out the link to Readings for some possible material.  (Any and all suggestions are most welcome.)

I will try to post some ideas here and then people can comment if they want.  Below is a little bit of the thought behind doing this.

About a month ago now in a discussion with Greg he brought up the idea of having a form in Mae Sot for some people to get together and discuss issues of development and education.  He talked about a think tank of sorts where people wanting to learn more and from each other can get together and throw some conceptual things against actual walls.  I know most of us have late night beer/work conversation tendencies, and these have often been most enlightening, but I must confess that often I will have little to no retention of the conversation upon awakening. Especially if it was beer Chang.

Working in this context I think we often self-learn to try to prepare for the decisions we have to make regarding implementation that effects the lives of those we work with.  More than once I have approached work with an uneasy feeling that there is something I’m missing in how I am thinking.  And there is, a lot of somethings, but I am not sure what they are.  It seems that in work with education there are notions of open communication, group work, getting feedback, being open to new perspectives etc. that we all agree are great and pretty cool things, yet I am often remiss in these very same concepts in my work.
